This simple object was created in TopMod. Find out more about this modelling program (it's free!) here:
[link] and here: [link] I watched the tutorial videos more times than I care to mention. I'm a slow learner, lol. Also downloaded some papers and more tuts from the site. After numerous attempts it finally "clicked". In one night I created about a dozen "sculptures" for lack of a better word. I still don't know much about modelling. Things like creating a nice, smooth mesh. This one has little angular areas even though I smoothed it in Hexagon2. But I'm excited that I've even managed to get this far! Many more to follow. Hopefully better. Thanks for looking! And especially thanks for comments and critiques. Oops almost forgot the brick texture is from Newtek! Applied to a terrain. Global illumination using a Dosch HDRI. No postwork other than the usual resizing. Rendered in Vue6i. CommentsWelcome to DA! We need more 3D artists here!
This is a good start. I especially like the texture. The only real critique I would have is that the perspective of the background plane contradicts the viewing angle, making it obvious that it is image mapped. Maybe try rotating it 180deg or use one that has less apparent depth. really cool render...and in VUE, such a nice quality...
perhap you should try usind g hdri+a spotlight to add just a little casting shadows and color..... i can see the hdri reflecting on the model, but it looks like is beeing illuminated by a white flat background.. -- In virtute sunt multi ascensus. ~ In excellence there are many degrees.----Cicero Member -> *Apophysis Thanks for your kind comment!
The following link is where I originally downloaded TopMod. There are some instructional videos and many papers and manuscripts. [link] The following links directly to the PDF document I used to create "My First Model". It didn't make much sense to me until I watched the tutorial videos. I never modelled anything before this. If I can do it anyone can, lol. [link] This next link has a wealth of information including the newest version! It looks now there's a Linux version too! [link] ***Ton's***of video tutorials here!: [link] And here's a huge gallery full of TopMod goodness: [link] Very inspirational stuff! Enjoy -- "Hot licks and rhetoric don't count much for nothin'. Be glad if you can use what you borrow." Borrowed from Steely Dan. Thanks for the welcome! Also thanks ALOT for the critique! I really appreciate it. It helps me grow and learn. I'm still learning to use Vue and it shows. I really struggled with that ground. I swear I spent more time on that than I did on the model, lol. Next time I'll just model my own tiles. It seems like no matter what I tried I just couldn't get the ground to look real. Until I learn mapping better I'll stick to something with less depth as you suggested. Thanks for the tips!

Next time I will definitely use a spotlight. Some shadow would have been nice in this. Maybe even a couple of point lights? The HDRI I used is the city scene from Dosch. Towards the bottome of the model you can barely make out one of the buildings. I did change the light settings a bit though. Maybe I washed it out in my attempt at brightening it. I'm franticallly trying to learn all this stuff and it's sort of overwhelming at times but I really do enjoy it immensely. Especially sharing it! Thanks for taking time to comment and for critiqueing and tips! -- "Hot licks and rhetoric don't count much for nothin'. Be glad if you can use what you borrow." Borrowed from Steely Dan. No proble. Image mapping can be good and saev a lot of time and headaches, it's just a matter of getting it to look right and not flat. Try the free textures at arroway ([link]) they come with diffuse, bump and specular maps for each texture. The samples are not super high resulution, but can look ok from relatively close up. The best thing for texture maps is to find ones that are taken from a straight on perspective.
Keep up the work and thanks for the watch! |
